closed for now
CLOSED for now…I am reclaiming the gallery as my personal studio again for the remainder of the 2021 season. WIth any luck, next spring and summer I will have some new work to show of my own. My garden has been an inspiration to me especially this year.
Thank you for turning out for the special exhibition “Contemporary Artifacts” that was held at the gallery Aug 18-22. If you would like to contact the artist Richard Buxton, you may do so directly via email rabuxton@gmail.com.
balanced & joyful
The Art By Katy Gallery is swept clean, the gallery kilim on the floor, the walls freshly painted and the Contemporary Artifacts show hung on the wall. The OPEN flag and road signs are positioned and thus begins the first art opening at my gallery since October 2019, 2 seasons ago. The plan was to sit this season out, too, but when Richard Buxton showed me his latest art pieces, well…I just had to give him a show. This is the first time I am exhibiting sculpture. Searching for the perfect display media—in this case, clear lucite floating shelves—was part of the fun. Today my 2 favorite pieces are Balanced and Joyful. A hummingbird just now hovered in front of my gallery window while I am seated at my desk typing this. Joyful, indeed.

Read Moreshakespeare in love
We have a wonderful theatre arts group here brought to us by the historic Opera House in the village of Stonington, Maine. They are currently preparing to put on “Shakespeare in Love” . I have two tiny vintage volumes of Shakespeare for sale at Art By Katy Gallery— I’m hoping that one of the thespians wanders in and can’t resist them. Meanwhile, here’s more info about the show from OHA’s newsletter blast:
Nothing says July at the Opera House better than rehearsals in full swing and the lupines on their own parade. We hope you've got your tickets for Shakespeare in Love (July 18-28), the perfect way to celebrate twenty years of Opera House Arts. Don't miss this heart-soaring play about finding freedom of the self through love; love of craft, love of another, love of community. The cast is hard at work making this playful story look joyous and easy. Their swashbuckling characters romp through theater-making in Elizabeth London-- and love, too! Did we mention love? Join them. Tickets are on sale here.
80 intrepid souls
The turnout for the Island Garden Tour 2019 was terrific despite —or perhaps because of—the gloominess of the day. 80 intrepid souls plus a few wandering friends traipsed through my garden. They all received the invitation to return anytime this summer to watch the later bloomers unfold in July and August.
my lemon day lilies
These lemon day lilies waited at least 14 summers to bloom for me because they were on a shady side of the house until I relocated them to the sunny areas of my garden. I’m told that this variety was quite popular on Deer Isle in the 1930s. Since my house was built in 1919, I would not be surprised if these plants are nearly as old as the farmhouse is. Come on the garden tour Saturday June 29th to see them in all their glory. There are several patches scattered throughout the landscape.
gallery & garden
Saturday June 29th is the Island Garden Tour and Art By Katy Gallery is one of 7 locations being featured. We’ll be serving lemonade and cookies in the gallery as well as a preview of the upcoming “A Stitch in Time” exhibition of vintage samplers from the 1930s to 1970s.
